This two-session event included an educational session followed by an application discussion session.  Each session was 60 minutes.  The educational session was recorded and is available to WeCOACH members in the Video Chat library.

As sports organizations look to be more inclusive in their policies and practices, having a strategic plan for including people who identify as transgender is more important than ever before.

These interactive sessions provide a critical overview of the key issues affecting transgender athletes in sport. Session 1, Participants will gain a greater understanding of the barriers of access and inclusion in sport for transgender athletes, and in particular transgender youth.

Session 2 will provide participants with concrete ways that they can start to can engage with these issues and begin implementing transgender inclusive practices and policies in their organizations. 

Ashland Johnson, Esq. Founder & President, Inclusion Playbook

Ashland Johnson is the founder and president of the Inclusion Playbook, a sports impact consultancy that specializes in racial justice, gender equity, and LBGTQ inclusion. An attorney, equity and inclusion strategist, and former Division I athlete, Ashland has over a decade of civil rights experience working with social justice communities, advising sports leaders, and serving in leadership roles in advocacy organizations.



Chris Mosier, Founder,

Chris Mosier is a trailblazing athlete, coach, and founder of In 2020 he made history by becoming the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Trials in the gender with which they identify. Prior to that, in 2015 he became the first openly trans man to make a Men’s US National Team. Following the national championship race, he was instrumental in getting the International Olympic Committee policy on transgender athletes changed, and in June 2016 he became the first trans athlete to compete in a world championship race under the new rules. He has been called “the man who changed the Olympics” by the BBC and New York Magazine. Chris is a six-time member of Team USA, representing the United States in the sprint triathlon and the short course and long course duathlon, which is a run/bike/run event, a two-time Men’s National Champion, and a Men’s All-American.

Chris is also a nationally recognized four-time Ironman triathlete, and inductee into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. He is sponsored by Nike and has been featured in multiple global Nike campaigns. Chris has been featured in publications including ESPN The Magazine, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and more.

Chris’s website is the go-to source for information about transgender athletes in sport. Chris has written and advocated for change in policies from the high school level to national governing bodies and professional leagues. He has become one of the leading grassroots organizers against the current wave of anti-trans legislation across the United States, and when not fighting the good fight, he mentors transgender and non-binary athletes around the world in hopes that he can live by his motto of “be who you needed when you were younger.”


Liam Miranda, Research and Training Director, Inclusion Playbook

Liam is a proud transgender researcher and former D1 student-athlete who is passionate about using data science to galvanize social change in sports. With a background in psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and public policy — he is invested in interdisciplinary work and has experience organizing across sectors and movements to accomplish equity-related goals. He currently co-leads programmatic development and implementation at the Inclusion Playbook to best equip athletes, teams, and sporting organizations with the tools needed to maximize the impact of their social justice work.

Liam is also involved in principal data collection, analysis, and publication for a variety of research projects — ranging from assessing LGBTQ public health campaigns to measuring and improving diversity and equity in nonprofit leadership. Liam was formerly the Senior Research Manager at the Human Rights Campaign, where he led research that helped shape and strengthen the HRC Foundation’s public education, policy, and programmatic work to advance LGBTQ inclusion. At the Human Rights Campaign, Liam also co-founded the Sports Equality project. Prior to this role, Liam was the Research and Program Manager at Athlete Ally where he designed best policies and practices for LGBTQ inclusion in athletic institutions.
